Red Horner born 1909 in Lyndon Ontario. He wore #2,#11,#15 playing defence for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Horner played 12 seasons with Toronto from 1928-29 to 1939-40.He came to the Leafs from the Toronto Marlboro`s of the OHA.
Horner`s defence partner was King Clancy, together they teamed one set of only 4 defenceman. A gritty player Horner led the league in penalty minutes for 8 seasons, he was the enforcer for the Toronto Maple Leafs, one tough player, in 1933 when Eddie Shore of Boston hit Ace Bailey of Toronto so hard from behind he nearly killed him Bailey hit his head on the ice and had to be rushed to hospital for life saving surgery. Horner skated up to Shore and knocked him out flat on the ice.
Horner helped his team win their first Stanley Cup in 1932. Once in 1932 Horner played goal for Lorne Chabot the Leafs goalie when Chabot was assessed a 2 minute penalty, in the 1930`s, goalies served their own penalties and it was for the whole 2 minutes, even if the other team scored on the power play. The coach could put any player he wanted in net during the 2 minutes.
After captain Hap Day was traded in 1938, Charley Conacher was made captain of the Leafs and that same year Conacher retired, opening the door for Horner to be named captain for the final 2 seasons of his career with Toronto.
