The Toronto Maple Leafs roster in 1967 was not expected to do well in the playoffs, let alone win the Stanley Cup that season. With an aging bunch of star players on the team, their heart and determination was felt throughout the playoffs by the fans. This team of players that could score goals and had won 3 previous Stanley Cups in a row, they stayed with their game plan of forechecking to create scoring chances.
The two goalies, Bower and Sawchuk, played some of the best net minding ever seen. Six games against Chicago and six games against Montreal, and as good fortune would have it playing back and forth, the Leafs won the deciding semi final in Toronto and the deciding final game for the 1967 Stanley Cup in Toronto.
Teams over the years have won the Stanley Cup in the opponents arena before, but its not the same as winning at home in front of your fans, the cheering of each player on the ice sharing the excitement to finally end the season that takes months from one year into the next.
Players such as Captain George Armstrong, who had 15 seasons with the Leafs and 3 Stanley Cup rings before 1967, helped lead the team in the playoffs. The big`M`, Frank Mahovlich, up until 1967 had 3 Stanley Cup rings and 10 seasons with the Leafs, scored 30 or more goals during 4 of them. Bob Pulford was a good two-way forward, checking was his game.
Red Kelly won 4 Stanley Cups with Detroit and 3 Cups with Toronto before 1967. Kelly had an ability to inspire his team mates to give their best effort. Dave Keon could shoot, score, pass and check, he was a great all round player. Keon had been with the Leafs for 3 Stanley Cup winning teams before 1967, winning the Calder and Lady Byng Trophies. Tim Horton was a solid defenceman that cleared his end efficiently. Allan Stanley was Tim Horton`s defense partner, together they were a great team.
Bob Baun was a defensive wall. Try to get by him and if you succeeded then goalies Bower or Sawchuk were waiting. Johnny Bower was very good at playing the angles on a shooter and he was a master at poke checking. Terry Sawchuk was considered the best goalie to ever play the game, One time in the 1953 playoffs with the Detroit Red Wings Sawchuk recorded a G.A.A. of 0.63 with 4 shutouts winning the Stanley Cup.
To Maple Leaf players and fans, then and now, this was a special time, with 4 Stanley Cups in the 1960`s, that came with memories of the players that can be looked back on with pride.
