Watch video of winning the game for the 1967 Stanley Cup
For diehard fans, the 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs are etched in collective memory. They were the heroes that won the 1967 Stanley Cup. And, that's how far back we have to go to have a Toronto cup memory at all!
And what great memories they are too. The underdog Toronto Maple Leafs finished the regular season in 3rd place, behind Montreal and Chicago. The Leafs matched up with Chicago for the first round of the 1967 Stanley Cup playoffs.
The pairing was good for the Chicago Black Hawks, who had lost only 5 out of 35 home games during the regular season, and finished in first place going into the playoffs.
The Black Hawks had the leading scorer for points in the regular season, Stan Mikita. Mikita won the title with help from his wingers, Doug Mohns and Ken Wharram. The Hawks also had Bobby Hull, with his curved stick that snapped his big booming slap shot - feared by goalies throughout the league.
The Leafs team was considered 'over the hill', with older players such as Johnny Bower, who was 42 years old, Allan Stanley at 41, Red Kelley at 39, Terry Sawchuk 37, and George Armstrong at 36. Sawchuk was even talking of retirement during training camp.
Going into the first series, the Toronto Maple Leafs weren't exactly favoured to win.
