There's an interesting story about Game 2 of the 1967 Stanley Cup Semi-Finals. There had been an Ice Show at Chicago Stadium for two days prior to the game, and the ice was a disaster for a hockey game. The ice had become slushy, forcing slower skating.
But slow is exactly what the the older Leafs team players needed. After badly losing game one to the fast skating Chicago Black Hawks, the Leafs needed a miracle on their side. The slushy ice was just the ticket, slowing down the boys from Chicago.
At one point in the regular season, the Leafs lost 10 straight games. Against Chicago, the Leafs had won 4, lost 8, and tied two against the superior Hawks. Chicago certainly seemed to have Toronto's number this season.
To make matters worse, Toronto's Johnny Bower and Terry Sawchuk had been repeatedly injured during the season. Sawchuk had back problems, and Bower had received injuries on and off all season.
But during the regular season. In a memorable game against Chicago, Terry Sawchuk recorded his 100th career shutout on March 4th, 1967, winning 3-0 against the Hawks.
It was a sign of things to come.
