In the regular 1967 season, Toronto finished with 75 points to Montreal's 77, and Chicago's 94. Chicago finished in first place in the standings for the first time in their history.
Chicago had a good team that could score and win hockey games, but in the playoffs, it was another story. All through the 1960's, time and again Chicago would not be a finisher. In only one year, 1961, did they win the Stanley Cup.
After losing Game 4 of the 1967 Stanley Cup semi-finals, Toronto began forechecking the Hawks, keeping their defence frustrated and prone to giving up scoring chances.
Chicago's coach, Billy Reay, was upset because the television breaks were giving the Toronto team a chance to rest after chasing his superior skaters.
