Captain George Armstrong came back from his knee injury and Larry Jeffery suffered a season ending knee injury. There was no scoring in the first period as both teams were forechecking each other to try and create scoring chances.
Half way through the second period, Montreal had some good opportunities to score. The Canadian shooters tested Sawchuk, chance after chance, but he kept the puck out of his net. Sawchuk had a good stand up stile of play, and when the opposition were in close he would go down on one knee to make the save giving himself the chance to stand back up quickly.
Former Leaf, but now playing with Montreal, Dick Duff, was a fast skater and he scored the lone goal for his team in the third period, skating fast into the Toronto end Duff faked defenceman Tim Horton to one side went around him to the net, firing a backhand shot past Sawchuk.
Montreal coach, Toe Blake, predicted a seven game series win for his team. The organizers of Expo 67, the World's Fair held in Montreal, had also expected Montreal to win. They even had a space already built for the Stanley Cup to be displayed.
Marcel Pronovost and Larry Hillman, both defencemen with the Leafs, did not allow an even strength goal throughout the playoffs.
