Johnny Bower's brilliant play in the net for Game 3 came to an abrupt end when he pulled a groin muscle during the Thursday warm-up for Game 4.
Bowers back up goalie, Terry Sawchuk, had thought he wouldn't be playing in Game 4, so he had been celebrating the night before. During the game he was trying to shake off a wicked hangover.
Hockey players are a superstitious lot, and someone noted that the Leafs had lost the last three playoff games played on a Thursday.
Maybe the superstition was at fault for the terrible play that night. The Leafs seemed to have completely forgotten their strategy of tight checking during Game 4, and Montreal won.
With momentum of the series going back in Montreal's favour, Toronto's confidence was at a very low point going into Game 5.
