For the Leafs, the tight forechecking that had worked on Chicago now worked against Montreal. Dave Keon was assigned to shadow Montreal's Jean Beliveau and Beliveau was watching Keon who was also a scoring threat.
Johnny Bower was now in the net for the Leafs, giving his team plenty of time to score, and win the game by stoning the Canadians cold.
Captain George Armstrong of the Leafs injured his knee, putting him out of the game.
To try and spark his team, Toe Blake the Montreal coach would send out his tough guy John Ferguson, to stir things up.
Not all players in the NHL had yet adopted the habit of wearing helmets or goalie masks. They were still optional. Only two players wore them, Bobby Rousseau and J.C. Tremblay for Montreal.
Two of the goalies wore a mask, Toronto`s Terry Sawchuk, and Montreal's goalie, Rogatien Vachon.
