The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadians have had a great rivalry over the years, and they meet again in the final series for the 1967 Stanley Cup.
In 1966, the Canadians quickly dispatched the Leafs, winning Lord Stanley's cup in four straight games. This time around, Montreal was hoping for the same result.
In the regular season, Montreal had finished in second place, and had played the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs. The Canadians easily pushed aside the Rangers in four straight games, and then sat back to see who they would play for the cup.
The coach for Montreal, Toe Blake, had said to the media that he would prefer to meet the Leafs in the finals instead of the first place Chicago Black Hawks.
Montreal had a rookie goalie in the 1967 season, Rogatien Vachon, who was called into action halfway through the regular season. At the age of 21, Vachon played so well that he kept the number one job in net for Montreal and for the playoffs.
Going into the final series, the Montreal Canadians had gone undefeated for the last thirteen games, with 7 wins and two ties in the regular season and a four game semi final sweep of the New York Rangers. The Canadians were primed for the Leafs.
